Week 1

THE BASQUE COUNTRYSIDE

Friday 5th & Saturday 6th March 2021

So first up we fly into Bilbao and tour throughout The Basque Country, there is a definite sense of difference to the rest of Spain. The language, the art , the people highlight the difference but the real pride and streak of independence in The Basque Country is expressed in their food. The very fact that tapas are not tapas in this part of the Iberian peninsula, they are Pinxtos.

They are fanatical about food and more especially fanatical about Basque food. On our first stop on our journey around Europe we visit The Basque Country, explore some recipes, and savour some of the great dishes of the region. Taking in the influences of the Pintxo bars of Bilbao and San Sebastien, the open grills of Getaria to the simple Txoko in villages all over the region.

No trip to The Basque Country is complete without sampling some wine from the region surrounded by Rioja and Navarra Basques have those influences as well as their very own wine culture. Their cherished Txakoli can drank all over the region.

Basques are said to not understand a life without the joy of food and drink so where better to start?
