The Wine Room
Autumn Wine Classes & Tastings 2018
Wine lovers will be thrilled to hear that their love of the good stuff can be taken to the next level with some wine classes at the food and wine lovers haven; No.1 Hotel and Spa here in Limerick.
The informal, pay as you go courses, are run by two passionate experts Liam Cabot and Simon Tyrell & suits all levels of interest in wine from the novice taster to the connoisseur and explores different themes each month.
Classes cost €25 each and included wine and nibbles. These are small classes that are very informative and fun plus there is so much to learn in a social setting. Pre booking is advised as places are limited.
Natural Wine – What is it?
I wish I knew! We tease out the issues behind a “natural” wine, and whether it’s even reasonable to call a wine “natural” when at the very least, the grapes have been picked and deliberately fermented by human intervention. Are all the big companies bad? Are all the small guys good?
Classic Food and Wine Pairings
This might sound the most “boring” of them, but it’s a subject that come up again and again. What wine/food combinations work, what to pair for a dinner party. What’s the safe choice, and what’s an unusual alternative? What can surprise your guests?
Off The Beaten Track
Regions and varieties you may never have heard of – but will be hearing a lot more about in the future. For example, Blaufrankisch was recently described by the New York Times as the “Best Red Grape Variety in the World that you’ve never heard of!
Beat the Post Christmas Blues
Reasons why it’s good to drink Wine in January! We all need a good reason! Where are the values? What are good detox wines (yes, they do exist). What are diet-friendly wines (apparently they exist too) – what about calories in wine …. Note that this tasting does not include the abomination that is “de-alcoholised wine”!
Fresh and fruity. Get set up for the arrival of Summer. Lighter reds and crisp whites. Spring is always a time of new vintages and exciting new arrivals.
Women in Wine
It’s a bit like positive discrimination – to do this again (after a very successful previous tasting) provokes the accusation of why highlight just women? Yet the fact remains that proportionally, women winemakers are far more successful than their male counterparts. Is winemaking one of the gender neutral professions – and is there a particular style or “waterprint”? And if there is, why are the majority of wine critics still male and how do they react to these wines?
